Off Season: Carin

Kirstin and I are gearing up for our first wedding of the season, but before we actually kick it off, we thought we’d share with you what we’ve been up to on the off season. As you know, we are both knitters, and although sumptuous yarn is what sustains me these Vermont winters, and I assure you there was plenty of knitting, and I had lots of other fun stuff going on, too.

In February, I had a show entitled At Play, which was a combination of my photography and my paintings, being inspired by my children and their sense of inventiveness and play, which I am constantly looking for in my practice as an artist. I had so much fun preparing for this show, and hope to capture the spontaneity that this work has in my summer wedding shoots.

And, I am in the middle of taking a pottery class. What a challenge. Give me a lump of clay and I’ll give you back a lump of clay that is a little drier and maybe resembles something that can hold liquid. That has always been the case. But, playing on the potters wheel this winter, and the sense of zen that comes from it, I maybe have a bowl or two I actually like. And, as someone who teaches people photography, it’s always good to be on the other side of things--the person being overwhelmed by the technical steps and sometimes a little confused about it all.
Oh yeah.... did I take any pictures of people? You know, like what I do for a living? This was the winter of babies (oh, and the spring of babies, too. And did I mention I’m having one in six weeks? I am. I’m excited. Sure, it was poor planning, what with wedding season and everything, and Kirstin will be kicking booty on a few solo weddings because of this, but what can you do? Thank God for a creative partner who can handle a few solo gigs)...

So, there you go. Off season. On season. It all blends rather nicely, actually. And now, I am so excited to switch gears for a summer filled with love, both for weddings and for that little sister that I'm sure my boys will take good care of while I'm shooting!
