Off Season : Kirstin

It's been a long winter. Oh so long. But as wedding season ramps up here in Vermont it's time to get this blog a crackin! We have some beautiful weddings with awesome couples lined up for the coming months. We're looking forward to sharing the images, the festivities and most importantly the love right here for everyone to see.

But to ease into it, we thought we'd each share a bit of what we've been up to during the downtime. Well, the downtime from weddings that is. Though Two House Photo requires year round attention - fielding inquiries, communicating with our couples and those boring officey details - as the wedding season calms going into winter, Carin and I both look forward to more time with our families and take on individual work with a variety of clients.

So first, Families! Love them. The dynamics, the personalities. It's probably my favorite subject to shoot. A few faves...

I did a bit more editorial, commercial work which I really enjoyed. Since I am not a "studio" photographer (maybe because I don't have a studio, ha! but also I like to travel light...) I shoot in a more lifestyle, photojournalistic vibe which can really work well for business clients

In February had the opportunity to travel and shoot a wedding with my sister Danielle. Escaping to Florida in the middle of Vermont winter was oh so dreamy.

I've taken the winter to familiarize myself with a new toy, a Holga camera. It's a treat shooting film. The contemplation it requires, the thoughtful intention. It really helps you slow down and take in a scene.

Carin was right when she said this has been the winter of babies. And baby bumps! There is one bump in particular that has us all excited around here. Carin is due in June! Can't wait to meet that little girl.

And most importantly, and most prolifically, there are the boys. My muses. My two sons Sam and Joe are never far from my lens. Going through my archive at the end of the year, it's a bit ridiculous how many pictures I take of my kids. Maybe I should start looking at it as a long term documentary project. An ongoing work, capturing youth as it transforms slowly into adulthood. Listen to me sounding all...conceptual. It would need a title. "We Break Stuff"? or perhaps "Bruise Factory." I'll have to think on it.

I'm happy to be shifting focus towards the couples we are working with and the amazing days that are ahead. Vermont weddings are by nature, beautiful. Whether church or barn, B&B or ski resort there is a distinct charm having the Green Mountain state as a backdrop to love. Looking forward to creating the images that our couples will carry with them through the rest of their lives.
